Morocco's medical equipment market: size, growth and how to enter it

A 236 million dollar market growing at 7% a year, 90% of it imported. What foreign suppliers need to know before entering Morocco.

Morocco's private healthcare sector is growing fast: more than 360 private clinics and over 9,661 specialist doctors, according to the Ministry of Health. For anyone selling medical equipment, that is an opportunity — and one that remains surprisingly under-served.

Market size and growth

The Moroccan medical device market is estimated at more than 236 million dollars, of which 181 million is imported. It grew by 7% over 2018-2021.

Imports account for roughly 90% of the market. Local manufacturing of medical devices remains at an early stage, so most segments depend on foreign supply. For an exporter, that is the headline figure: nine products in ten sold in Morocco came from somewhere else.

Where demand is coming from

Public and private demand are both rising. The government plans to build several university hospital centres, and to expand emergency units and mobile hospitals. On the private side, the growth in clinics and specialist practices drives steady equipment renewal.

One regulatory point worth knowing: the Ministry of Health requires all second-hand medical equipment to be registered within 12 months of purchase.

How business actually works here

Moroccan business runs on trust and mutual respect, built over time. Exporters need patience — procedures take longer than in Europe or North America, and relationships come before contracts.

The practical consequence: work with a locally based agent or distributor. A local partner brings three things a foreign company cannot build quickly — key contacts, working knowledge of customs regulations, and visibility on opportunities that never appear in a tender notice.

Understand the regulatory environment fully before you commit. Companies that skip this step lose months unpicking avoidable problems.

A gap worth noticing

Despite the market size, branded medical equipment franchises and authorised resellers of international brands remain rare in Morocco. For a manufacturer looking for distribution, the field is less crowded than the numbers suggest.

Morocco as a gateway to Africa

With around 250 registered agents and distributors, Morocco positions itself as a redistribution hub towards the rest of the continent. Manufacturers sell to distributors, who then supply buyers across West and North Africa.
